Galveston Fishing ReportA typical February in Texas generally means strong cold fronts, rain, lots of wind… with a few good days of warm weather and clear skies mixed in.  February 2017 has been anything but typical so far.  Many days we have reached temperatures 80 degrees and higher.  February 11 the recorded temperature in Harris (Houston) County reached 86F.  What does this mean for our Galveston Fishing Charters?  We are ahead of schedule, and fishing is Hot.

This past week our Galveston Fishing Guides spent their times casting lite weighted live shrimp along the Galveston Jetties targeting Bay Snapper, Speckled Trout, Red Fish, and black drum.  Some very large Bay Snapper are showing up and red fish, drum and specks are mixed in as well.

The most overlooked fish in Galveston Bay is the Bay Snapper or Sheepshead.  These fish are excellent table fare, put up a tremendous battle on light tackle, and are very abundant during the spring time as they perform their annual spawn along the jetties, and passes.  Their white flaky fillets can be grilled on the half shell, fried, baked and even make excellent ceviche.  This is the absolute best time of year to target these fish, and as water temps continue to rise it will get better each day.

Galveston Fishing Outlook

If the weather pattern stays the same throughout this month – Our Galveston Fishing Charters will beGalveston Fishing Report ahead of schedule for summer time fishing.  Galveston Fishing Guides may be fishing June patterns in May.  The Galveston Bay and Marsh is already seeing mass numbers of red fish in the 17” to 19” range with some nice slots mixed in.  This is typical for March and April, but to see these young fish in February in the shallow marshes is anything but usual.  The bait fish in the back of the lakes and bayous is abundant, not typical for February.  Water temperatures being as high as they are – this is the reason we are seeing this occur.

Offshore fishing out of Galveston will most likely see an early arrival of cobia, king fish, mahi, sharks, and Spanish mackerel.  We are gearing up for another great Red Snapper Season in Galveston, and are excited for the extra days we anticipate getting this year as charter boats.

Spring Break in Galveston is always a very busy time for our Galveston Fishing Guides, and this year may be a record breaker.  Fishing in Galveston during Spring Break is always great, but with the mild Galveston Family FishingFebruary temperature – we may see some downright super amazing catches.  Our Kid Friendly Galveston Fishing Guides are the absolute best around, and always ensure the kids catch the biggest and the most!  The smiles on kids’ faces is what our Guides strive for on each and every Galveston Family Fishing Charter.  Call Captain Greg at 409-739-8526 to set up a trip or ask any questions you may have.  Captain Greg and Fishing Galveston Tx Fishing Guides will be at the Houston Fishing Show March 8 – 12.  Captain Greg will be giving a seminar on Sunday the 12th at 11am on Catching Fish in Galveston 12 month a year.  If you can, stop by our booth, meet the Captains and say hi.
