Galveston Fishing Report – Strong Start for 2017

Fishing Report for Galveston Bay – Strong Start to 2017, Red Fish, Bay Snapper and Flounder Gigging

Galveston Fishing Reports

Our Galveston Fishing Guides have had a strong start to the 2017 Fishing Season.  Mild temperatures and water temperatures in the low to mid 60s are making things a little different than our normal January fishing.  We are beginning to see signs of Bay Snapper moving in from the Gulf and to our passes, also seeing lots of activity along mid bay oyster reefs as well as bayous.

Red Fish are being caught along the Galveston Jetties, back lakes and bayous.  Live shrimp, live mullet, plastic lures are catching the redfish.  Live shrimp is the number one choice for the Bay Snapper.  While fishing along the Galveston Jetties, we prefer to free line the live shrimp along the jetty rocks in areas that current is running thru the rock wall or around the tips.  The key to finding feeding fish along the Galveston Jetties can be a matter of a few feet.  As unlikely as this may sound, we have seen this many times.  Currents pushing thru the granite wall will congregate fish as they ambush bait fish riding the currents thru.  The amount of weight used to compensate currents and reach the correct depth the fish are holding and keep it there is critical.  Our Galveston Fishing Guides will change the amount of weight used until the correct amount is found.  Changes in currents can also mean a change in rigging.  With decades of experience fishing the Galveston Jetties, our Fishing Guides know the areas of the jetties that are the ‘hot spots’ to ensure our Galveston Fishing Charters are the best on the island.

Galveston Flounder Gigging Report

When the winds have been light – our Galveston Flounder Gigging Charters have been very productive.  The challenge has been – these conditions we need have been few and far between.  The wind cant blow forever, and when the conditions are right – we will be out there gigging flounder.

If these temperatures continue along this path, we will see the month of February have some March like catches.  Big Black Drum will be on the hit list as well as Bay Snapper, Red Fish, and Giant Speckled Trout.  February is a great month for Giant Trophy Speckled Trout.  The quantity may be slim, but February is a great month to catch the trophy of a lifetime.

Galveston Spring Break is approaching and we are already beginning to book up.  Give us a call and book your date for a great day of fishing in Galveston.  409-739-8526
