Things To Do – Galveston Spring Break Fishing 2023

Written by Captain Greg Verm

Galveston Island has been the #1 Spring Break Destination for Texas for very good reasons.  With close proximity to the major Cities of Texas – Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, College Station and more – Not only families from these large cities, but from all over the United States make Galveston, Texas their Spring Break Vacation.  Beautiful Beaches, Great Resorts, Water Front House Rentals, Fine Restaurants, Mild Temperatures, Museums, Space Center Houston, and our favorite – Fishing in Galveston!  With so many species to fish for and catch – it is no wonder Galveston is known as a Fisherman’s Paradise.  Spring Time is a great time for  Family Fishing for Bay Snapper, Black Drum, Bull Reds, Speckled Trout, Red Fish, Flounder, sharks, and more.  Spring Break Fishing in Galveston is tough to beat!

February marks a very exciting time of year for our Galveston Fishing Charters.  This is the beginning of the annual spawning activities of two very fine fish – the Bay Snapper (sheepshead), and the Black Drum.  The Bay Snapper begin migrating from the Gulf of Mexico to the passes, jetties and bays to spawn, and we love to target these tasty eating fish.  They can be relatively easy to catch (with the right instruction) – and great fun for kids and adults to hook into and battle.  We generally use spinning tackle, spooled with 12 lb test line, a #1 J-hook, and very little weight.  Live shrimp is the bait of choice for these tasty Snapper of the Bay.  Your fishing rods will be bent over throughout the trip as our Galveston Fishing Guides get you and your family in the perfect spot for the most action.  As we fish for the Bay Snapper, it is very typical to also catch speckled trout, red fish, black drum, pompano and more.  The great thing about Spring Break Fishing in Galveston is you just never know what you may catch!

If you wish to keep some or all of your catch for dinner we will fillet and bag ’em up for you.  We can even let you know a couple of restaurants that will cook your fresh caught Fish!  After we ice down some great tasting fish we will move out into the deeper waters and fish for the spawning Giant Black Drum.  This is what Galveston natives call the “Drum Run”.  These fish are extremely large and will give you the workout of a lifetime as you battle these beasts to the surface.  From 15 to 40 plus pounds, catching a Giant Black Drum should be on your to do list for your Galveston Spring Break Fishing Trip.  We will use the same gear as we use for our Deep-Sea Trips for these massive fish. These fish are catch and release only, but take a picture before the release to update your social media profile picture!

Another great trip during this time is the Back Lakes and Marshes of Galveston and Freeport, Texas. Shallow, calm and secluded from crowds – this trip is sure to get you hooked up. Our main target on the Bay/Marsh trips is red fish! Fishing with live bait under a popping cork – there is something magical about seeing your popping cork disappear. The Back Lakes and Marshes have clients coming back year after year. The beautiful serenity, wildlife, solitude and the boat ride itself down the bayous make this an amazing trip before a hook is even wet! Migratory and Native Birds, wild hogs, alligators, turtles, coyotes, deer, and more may be seen on these trips.

We will be running two trips a day – morning and afternoon.  Our Family Friendly Galveston Fishing Guides are lifetime natives and anglers of Galveston Bay, and you can be sure your family will be in the right spot at the right time to catch the most fish.   All of our Captains are Kid Friendly Fishing Guides, and love to get kids hooked on fishing!  Give Captain Greg a call or text him at 409-739-8526 for questions or if you would like to know our availability.  Don’t hesitate – book your Galveston Spring Break Vacation today!
