Galveston Fishing Reports – Upper Texas Coast Fall Fishing and Flounder Gigging

Written by:  Captain Greg Verm

The changes of the seasons are always a highlight for outdoor enthusiasts.  Here on the upper Texas Gulf Coast cooler temperatures begin with the shortening of daylight hours, and the occasional early fall cool fronts that pass through the State.  Just a slight water temperature change will trigger some great things for Galveston Bay Fishing.  Our Galveston Fishing Guides look forward to these changes and love seeing the redfish, speckled trout and flounder respond to the temperature changes.

One of my favorite places to spend a morning or afternoon during this time is in the back lakes, marshes and bays of Galveston.  From October to December the mullet spawn here in Texas and the hyperactivity of these fish create a domino effect for increase feeding activity of Red Fish, Speckled Trout and Flounder.  Right now, there are high numbers of perfect size finger mullet in the back lakes and bayous, and the red fish, trout and flounder are feeding heavily on these bait fish.  This past week, we have been targeting open bay oyster reefs, and bayou drains and catching some great slot red fish and speckled trout.  The flounder has not really cooperated this past week, but as the temperatures continue to fall daily – the flounder bite will also follow.

On our Galveston Back Bay and Bayou trips, not only is the fishing great right now, but the wildlife activity itself is something that I always look forward to.  On our back bayou trip yesterday, we saw alligators and very large groups of teal flying overhead.  Many other species of birds and ducks will continue to migrate to our coast.  Geese, Red Heads, White Pelicans, Gadwalls, Buffleheads, Pintail, Sandhill Crane and more will continue to migrate to our Texas Gulf Coast.

Another great Galveston Fishing Charter during this time is along the Galveston Beachfront and Jetties.  As the bull red run is ramping up right now, we will continue to see increased activity though the month of October and into November.  Giant Bull Redfish are making their way from the Gulf and into our passes, channels and river mouths right now for the annual spawn.  Here at Fishing Galveston TX, we have always called it Red October!  Also, the Galveston Flounder Fishing along the passes and channels start getting excellent with every drop in degree of water temperature.

Our Galveston Flounder Gigging Charters are getting booked up, and we extremely look forward to those calm and crisp evenings on Galveston Bay hunting the bay floor for the elusive Flounder!  Many clients will combine a half day fishing trip with a flounder gigging adventure for double the fun with our Galveston Fish-Gig Combos!

It is a great time of year to be on the Upper Texas Coast, and our Galveston Fishing Guides are sure to put you in the right place at the right time for your next adventure.   We also have affordable waterfront lodging for our out-of-town visitors at Freeport Fishing Lodge.  Give us a call today at 409-739-8526 for your Fall Fishing Adventure!
