Strong Summer Fishing

Our Galveston Fishing Charters had a great fun filled fishing summer this year.  Speckled Trout, Red Fish, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Pompano, Sharks, Red Snapper, Wahoo, Kings, Amberjack, Mahi, Cobia, and more stretched the lines of some very happy customers.  As we always are excited about meeting new customers, clients, and friends, this season has really been a great year to see so many of our returning customers visit and fish with us again and again.

As August drew to an end, we did experience something I have never seen in my 42 years of living on the Texas Gulf Coast – a storm that dropped more than 50 plus inches of rain in less than three days…Hurricane Harvey!  We saw canals, bayous and ditches come out of their banks and into places water has never been.  Our Bay system saw an incredible amount of freshwater flow thru her, like never before.  As my brain was absorbing what my eyes were seeing, I asked myself… “what is this going to do to my fishing?”  Well, only one week later I was back on the water and had my customers limited out on redfish and released over 20 more!  Galveston Bay is resilient.  Mother Nature always has a way to overcome and adapt.

Since Hurricane Harvey, fishing has been incredible along our jetties and beachfronts.  This past week we continue to catch redfish.  Also, showing itself is speckled trout, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Pompano, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and even sharks are back.  Water salinity levels in back lakes and bayous are still not on a normal level, however fish are being caught in these areas as well.  Water clarity is becoming more stable, and slowly increasing.

September is known for incredible Red Fish action here in Galveston and will continue thru October.  Spawning activities are in full force.  I would have to say that I like October red fish action more because the temps will get cooler, and weather more stable.  As the water temps fall each day, more and more flounder will begin making their ways thru the Bays and into funnels of the passes for their annual migration to spawn.  Speckled trout will be getting even hotter as temps cool as well.  The month of October is most likely the favorite month of the year for outdoor enthusiasts.  It is kind of a month that is hard to decide where to fish because it is all good!

Fishing Outlook – October Flounder Gigging and Fantastic Fall Fishing

Many customers ask me “when is the best time to go flounder gigging?”  That is kind of a loaded question.  Mother Nature dictates when the best time to go is… however, October is a month when she cooperates the most.  We will be gigging some good quality and quantity of Galveston flounder during October.  The fish will begin trickling out of bayous and back lakes and into Bays leading to passes.  Water temps will cool down, clarity will increase, and flounder will be seen!  October is also a great month for Fishing in these areas as well.  Red fish and speckled trout will be in these areas, and can be caught before the sun sets and we begin gigging.  This is when our Fish-Gig Combo trips are the most popular.  This year we have also added lodging for our customers for those late-night finishes when driving home may not be the most popular thing to do.  Fishing out of our lodge is a great experience, and convenience is second to none.

The Fishing along the jetties in October is great for bull reds, redfish, flounder, speckled trout, Spanish Mackerel, and more.  This is a great month to be fishing the funnel areas of the Galveston Channel, San Luis Pass and Freeport Jetties.  Live Shrimp, live mullet, and soft plastics will be our go to baits for reds and flounder.  Bull reds will be caught on cut mullet and fresh shad.
